deposition before His Majesty's Council, 12 August 1686
The deposition of Thomas Burton aged 29 years or thereabouts deposeth & saith that some time in Octobr 84, this depont went to Towne wth Capt Ch. Burrows, Jerh. Burrows, Capt Willm Seymour, & Joseph Hinson and when they came to towne sd Capt Burrows went to ye GovE when he was standing by some pales wch lead to ye church and this depont with ye rest of ye sd Compa. went to one Andrew Manwarings house where Henry Tucker of ye Towne came to them and there staid to this deponents remembrance till about two or three o'clock in ye morning only for said Burrows his Com.y; this depont did hear ye watch at ye bridg who asked who was there, ye answer made was "Capt Burrows" upon wch ye depont said to ye Company, "yonder is Capt Burrows shall we go to him" and immediately did goe to ye bridge where was ye GoverE & sd Capt Burrows; ye GoverE did seem to be in a great passion and would have Burrows seized and pressed ye Constable towrds him, ye moone shining very bright, but Burrows replyd; he came to looke after his boat and would not be seized for nothing. Burrows retreated a considerable way back, ye GoverE followed him, & would have ye watch seize him but they did not; at length Burrows drew his sword and desired ye GoverE to keep off at his peril, the GoverE striking at him, as this depont thinkes, he ye sd Burrows putting the blows by, broke his sword & they closed together & Jer. Burrows commanded ye peace and this depont & sevrall of ye Townes people being by, ye GoverE tooke hold of this depont by ye shoulder & middle & complained of his legg upon wch this depont did conveigh & assist ye Gover to e topp of ye staires going into ye Govers hall & further saith not, ye sd depont further saith yt amongst ye sd Townes people being by in ye disturbance was ye GoverEs boys & Capt John Tucker.
