"Jan 10, James Butterfield, master of the sloop Ariel of this island, reports that, on Tuesday last, he was chased by a suspicious looking brigantine off Grand River, on the north side of this island, and, to avoid her, he made sail to the NE, and returned round Point Galliote through the serpent's mouth, that previous to falling in with the brigantine, he had called at Toro, and was there informed that a suspicious looking brigantine had been cruizing off that coast for three or four days, that on the same day he was chased, as before mentioned, he saw the brigantine chase a full rigged brig, she hauled her wind to the north and escaped. The brigantine was painted black, with a red line round, high bow, mainmast raking over the stern, and showed a white flag at the fore
