Geography Overview

Barbados (pronounced bärba´doz) is an island state consisting of 166 square miles (430 square kilometers) in the West Indies. The capitol and largest city is Bridgetown .

The West Indies, an archipelago, is located between North and South America from Florida to the coast of Venezuela and separating the Caribbean Sea and the Gulf of Mexico from the Atlantic Ocean. (See Map at Caribbean-On-Line.com)

The archipelago, sometimes called the Antilles, is divided into three groups:

(1) Bahamas
(2) Greater Antilles, including Cuba, Jamaica, Haiti, the Dominican Republic, and Puerto Rico
(3) Lesser Antilles, including Leeward Islands, Windward Islands, Trinidad and Tobago, BARBADOS, and the islands off the northern coast of Venezuela.

Barbados is the easternmost of the Caribbean islands. It is low and rises gradually toward its highest point at Mt. Hillaby (1,104 ft/336 m).
