Subj:	Burts in Virginia Timeline

--=====================_850101051==_
Content-Type: text/plain; charset="us-ascii"

Hi Bill and everyone,

I am attaching a timeline of Burts in Virginia. This is only a preliminary
list. I know that there is much more to add. I hope this helps.

Sarah, which Richard Burt married Elizabeth Williams? You suggested that she
might have been Elizabeth Alston, dau. of John and Mary Alston, and widow of
Samuel Williams. The marriage date for Samuel and her was c1728. Richard
Burt, son of John and Grace Burt, was born 1724, which would make her about
twenty years older than him.

I'm enjoying all the messages and ideas. Keep it up.

Happy Holidays,
John

Sarah,

Could you please pass these comments on to everyone. I am making a running
list as I read all of ya'lls great work. Do you want the Marshall data. I
think that there are going to be MANY intermarriages between the families.
Also Richard Dietz is the Davis expert. He writes the Diggin for Davis.
However, he and I are both not too sure about a possible confusion between
the Lewis and Arthur Davises. Another problem with same names and places.
Nothing new in my lines.

Elizabeth Eelbank widow of J. Eeelbank could not be Elizabeth Ann Davis as
she was born 17 Feb 1780. Orindatus died very young. He was born abt
1746. Neither of his daughters were married before 29 June 1780. [WB 3:21

Hi everyone,

Forgive me for indulging in wild speculation, but try this on for size.
John Burtt, b. c1692, is the son of Richard Burt, the Elder, b. 1665.
Richard Burt, Jr., b. 1685, of York county is his brother. The father of
Richard the elder is another Richard born c1642 in Charles River (Gloucester
Co.). His father was Richard Burt, b. c1620, who was tobacco viewer in
Warick River Co. in 1639 and was in Charles River Co. before 1642. His
father was William Burt, arrived Jamestown in 1623. Just a thought.

Regarding the wife of William Burt, son of Joseph Burt. I have her as Martha
Elizabeth Davis rather than Eelbanck. I was thinking that the will of
Elizabeth Elbanck suggested that she was widow of ___ Davis who remarried
___ Elbanck. That would still explain the reference to daughter Martha
Elizabeth Burt. Does anyone have anything connecting her to the Davis family
or is Elbanck correct?

That was quick work on the Burt homepage, Barbara. I'm going to signoff
right now and check it out.... By the way, have you gotten your new "Autauga
Ancestry"? That was my baby. Whadda ya think?

Happy Holidays,
John

John and all

I too have had some ideas very similar to what you have written. My only
problem with that specific lineage is that in the will of Richard Burt the
Elder, born ca 1665, is that neither John nor any of his children are
listed in the will of Richard the Elder. This will, dated 21 Feb 1744, is
recorded in York County Wills and Inventories, 1746-1759, Page 8. In that
will, he names two sons, Josias and William, and nineteen grandchildren.
The male grandchildren with the surname of Burt include:
	Richard, son of Josias,
	John,
	William,
	Matthew,
	Philip, and
	Moody.
Only the first grandson, Richard is identified with his father.

My "wild speculation" is that your John was the son of a brother to Richard
the Elder. However, the problem this line of my reasoning and research to
date is that I have not been able to identify any one even as a possible
brother to Richard the Elder. Have you found any one else who could be a
son of the Richard Burt born c 1642 in the Gloucester area of Charles River
county and thus a brother of Richard the Elder?

How does this fit as speculation?

I believe we need to do some such speculation to help us try to perform the
exhaustive research I believe we must do. Consequently, and from my point
of view, another other ideas and "speculations" are encouraged.

Barbara, yes, I too concur that your pages are a super start.
Congratulations. And Thanks.

Kind regards to all.

Subj:	More Burt Information

Hi Everyone,

I visited the Alabama Archives yesterday to do a little Georgia research and
found several items of interest (maybe):

"Linkage: The Study of a Family", Vols. 1 & 2 by Jo Smith Webb, 1985
contained a Flewellen line. Richard Flewellen b. 1683 Bristol Parish, VA
m1727 Betsy or Nancy Taylor, b. 1680. Son: William Flewellen b. 1720 Bristol
Parish, VA d. 1786 Halifax Co, NC m1750 Betsy Holloway. Children: Alexander,
Abner, Shadrack, James, Howell, William, Taylor, & Alexander Flewellen.
Abner Fllewellen b. 25 Jun 1760 Halifax Co, NC d. 15 Aug 1815 Baldwin Co.,
GA m. Nancy Ann Lane b. 25 Jan 1766 Halifax Co., NC d. Dec 1846. There's
more of Abner's descendants if anyone is interested.

The same source contained a Hurt line. Of interest is the following: Joel
Hurt in Hancock County, GA made deeds of gift 4 May 1798 to sons-in-law
Edmund Gamble (1 slave), and William Burt (5 slaves) both formerly of
Halifax Co., NC, and to sons: Wm. Hurt (10 slaves) of Hancock Co, GA and
Elisha Hurt (9 slaves) of Warren Co, GA. These deeds were witnessed by M.
Green, JP, and Henry Hurt and recorded 4 Jan 1800, Hancock Co. Deed Bk. C,
pp. 303-307.

The William Burt mentioned here must be William Burt, Sr. Both Jesse and
Zacheus Burt (sons of Joseph) married daughters of William Burt, Sr. and
gave their children the middle name of Hurt, the name of their maternal
grandmother. Makes perfect sense. Now if we can decide whether William, Sr.
was brother to Joseph or a son of one of Joseph's brothers. What do ya'll think?

In Georgia Bible Records compiled by Jeanette Holland Austin I found a Bible
of W. T. Burt family of Oglethorpe Co., GA. W. T. Burt & Mrs. M. J. Tiller
m. 27 Nov 1866 and had children WC, JL and TH Burt. Any ideas?

Hancock County, GA Early Records compiled by the Alden Assoc. includes
Robert Burt m Dorothy Lewis 5 Jun 1813

In Records of Baldwin Co. GA I found John Bert on muster roll of 33rd
Regiment, 2nd class Georgia Militia 9 Nov 1814. John Burt also appeared in
1810 Census in Capt. Watson's Military District, Baldwin Co., GA.

The problem w/ the above is that I also found John Burt, Sr. in the 1810 and
John Burt in the 1820 Halifax Co, NC censuses. I have a similar problem w/
Joseph Burt, Jr. He is listed in the 1810 and 1820 census in Halifax Co.,
but also had a draw in the 1820 Georgia Land Lottery, living in Putnam Co.
According to the requirements to participate in this lottery, you had to be
a 3 year Georgia resident. Am I missing something?

Also in the 1820 Lottery were Spencer and Zacheus Burt of Putnam Co. Anyone
know who Spencer was? The 1821 lottery listed Fansanna Burt (Wit) in Warren
Co. and James Burt in Putnam Co. Who is Fansanna Burt?

Just wanted to give you some things to ponder. Until next time...

Good Hunting,
John

John,

I do not have proof, but I do believe that it is more likely that 1st
cousins marry. My two cents.

The Linkage book is very interesting, but it does have some errors, as does
Jeanette Austins book, esp. on the Bass lines. I am the editor of the Bass
family newsletter and that book has caused many problems for us. The book
contains many of my family lines. By bringing in other collateral lines,
you will see that there are even more links than she has stated. By
following all of my lines, I find that I am related to myself many times
over. (about 3 pages worth) and I only know of 1 instance of first cousins
marrying (so far). So, you have an idiot on board trying to help.
However, I can tie my shoes.

Thanks for all of your great help. I am including what I have on the
Hurt's. This might help with the search for SPENCER BURT???

I am not a HURT, to my knowledge, however out of the group below, I am a
Flournoy, Burt, & Bass. However these that are listed are in my direct
lines, but are close cousins.

Ya'll are all doing such a wonderful job.

Thanks again,
Lea

Lea,

The deed as listed in "Linkage" lists William Burt as a "Son-in-law" in
1798. I would like to see the original deeds to be sure this is not an
error. I have no knowledge of the Hurt family other than the information you
gave and what is in the "Linkage" book, so I am certainly not an expert, but
William Burt, Sr. marrying a Hurt seems the only logical way to explain the
use of the Hurt name in the families of two of William's daughters. Maybe I
can look into this further after Christmas.

Regards,
John

  John,

Why is this the only logical way to explain the appearance of "Hurt?"
Perhaps we need to go back a generation or two, or perhaps someone (e.g.
Joel Hurt) was a close friend? I think it unlikely William Burt in the
deed you mentioned to be William Burt Sr., since his will was recorded
  in Halifax Co., NC.

  Barbara

P.S. Got my latest Autauga Ancestry... you've done a good job. The

Barbara,

You may be correct, but it is a possibility, so I look. However, for years
I looked for an "Eaton" connection to justify my 3rd great grandfather's
name of Eaton Bass. I looked high and low. Last year while visiting VA
and walking the properties I found the connection. Eaton's father owned an
ordinary in VA. It was next to Eaton's Ferry. He named him after his
neighbor. At least it finally explained the connection.

Barbara,

I hate to beat a dead horse, but I still believe the deed must refer to
William Burt, Sr. (whoever he is). The deed was dated 1798, so the Hurts
had probably just arrived in Hancock Co. The marriage would have taken
place perhaps several years earlier in Halifax Co. We already know that
Joseph and John moved back and forth between NC and GA, why not William, Sr.
too? It is certainly worth further research.

Thanks for the good word on the "Ancestry". The Burt page is coming along
nicely too. Should we annouce it on the mail lists?

Regards,
John

Subj:	Merry Christmas

To each and every one

A very Merry Christmas to you and your house from our house.

May the spirit of the season be with each.

Now, Burt info. In the book "Virginia Wills and Administrations 1632-1800
An Index, Compiled by Clayton Torrence, he records two wills in the 1600s:
	Northampton
		Jno 1691 w

	Westmoreland
		Jno 1674 w

These are the only wills, etc., that he included in the 1600s involving any
Burt men.

These counties are all over there in the Southeastern part.

I just found this past week and have done no research on any of it. I have
entered these on the time line, If any one has any other data pertaining to
these two, let me know.

Again, Season's Greeting and kind personal regards to all.

Bill

Here is the document. I do have some specific additions I want to make but
the LDS library is closed for the holidays so I can't get to the microfilm
to get dates. Also I have written a lady in Birmingham for a couple of
specific dates and events.

Of course, I imagine we will have additions from time to time, any way. Right?

Hope all is well with you and your family. We are both fine, except I ATE
TOO MUCH.

Kind regards

Bill

Hi y'all

Trust all is well.

I just remembered this that I had not shared with you. Back in the summer
and early fall, I was in email correspondence with Betty, the wife of James
Burt of Baton Rouge, LA. In a message back in the summer, she sent me the
following message. The "James" at the begining is James Burt, Baton Rouge,
Betty's husband. I know nothing else of Davis Monroe nor Bill Burt nor
Roffie Burt nor of Roffie Burt's ancestors and relatives listed.

>James received a note from David Monroe (Bill Burt's brother in law). He
>enclosed a letter from Roffie Burt of Starkville, MS. I am so slow, I meant
>to send you a copy when we received it. I've decided to type it so you'll

>Betty
>

Hope this might help in some way that I cannot recognize right now. I plan
to write him soon.

I have also had some recent snail mail correspondence with a lady in B'ham
AL about the early Burt family. she does not believe she is descended from
the Burt line, rather an allied line, a Hill line back in York Co., VA of
our general time frame. She also gave me the addresses of two Mathis men
whom she says are descended from Robert Mathis, the author of the Book
about Mathew Burt of VA and the Deep South. I plan to write them to see if
they are descended from Robert Mathis, and, if so, do they know where any
of his reference material might be located. While I do not accept some of
the things that he stated in the book, I sure would like to see some of his
notes, etc.

Happy New Year.

Barbara,
Saw you name on the Internet. I'm looking for a John Burt from GA who
died in Alabama around 1828. His daughter Rebecca married John Marshall
Feb 1810 in Putnam Co. GA. I have a lot of information on the Marshalls
and Burts of Halifax Co. NC, and GA but have been unable to tie my people
in to them. Perhaps you can help?
Thanks in Advance,

Do you have a marriage date? Could it refer to Stephen Wright Marshall, son
of John Marshall, b. 1790, and Elizabeth Wright. The Elizabeth Marshall who
witnessed the marriage could be his mother.

Regarding the other information that you sent, I doubt that the Burts in
the Massachuetts militia where ours. That is a large Burt community in
Massachuetts that is not connected to us.

The info from the Columbus Enquirer was interesting. I have a DAR
application on Joseph Burt by descendents of his son Zacheus. It gives
Elizabeth's death date as 2 Sep 1853 in Marion Co., GA, source given as
family Bible. It newspaper gives 15 June 1851 in Talbot County. Without
seeing the original Bible records I would probably trust the newspaper
record. Any thoughts?

I also have a couple of questions regarding the Stephen Marshall
descendents you sent me Dec. 16th.:
1. You give a marriage date of 10 Jul 1845 for William Blount Marshall and
2nd wife Mary Annice Flournoy, then list their children as James Flournoy
Mahone[Marshall?] b. 1836, Stephen F. Marshall b. 1839, & Samuel B.
Marshall b. 1841. Is the marriage date incorrect or do those children
belong to first wife? I quess the former given the Flournoy middle names.

2.You list the second wife of James Franklin Marshall, son of Stephen M.
and Eliz. Burt, as Clifford Weaver. Unusual name for a woman??? ;-}

I am just now getting all the information everyone sent me before Christmas
entered into my database. Thanks to everyone for the help.

Barbara

Happy New Year.

Just received your message in response to Sandy's inquiry. Hopefully we
will get some more interested too.

I corresponded with the other Burt researcher in Baton Rouge, and received
a response. She (her husband, that is) is also descended from Matthew, my
line. I am also going to ask her about her cousin. Will try to keep all of
this in order and keep you and the others posted. In her message she
included this:

I tried to go to this GOPHER site, using Netscape, got the red light and
the clouds going through the Netscape logo, and then it all quit with a
blank page.

So, can you help and direct me, please?

The Goode and Mills names are associated with my Burt line in Edgefield
Co., SC. And the mention of 1665 almost has to take it to Virginia.

Thanks for your help.

Hi everyone,

I am reading "The Federal Road through the Creek Nation and Alabama,
1806-1836" by Henry D. Southerland, Jr. and Jerry E. Brown, which is the
route our ancestors would have taken into Alabama from the Carolinas and
Georgia. There are several Marshalls mentioned that I wanted to see if
anyone could identify:

p. 26 In Sept. 1806 Capt. Thomas Marshall was mentioned at the Coweta
Indian village below present day Columbus, GA on Chattahoochee River. This
was near the Alabama and Georgia border.

p. 68 In the 1820s Joseph Marshall operated a ferry on the Federal Road
crossing the Chattahoochee River to Ft. Mitchell.

p.75 Gen. Lafeyette's party crossed the Chattahoochee River 31 March 1825
on Joseph Marshall's Ferry.

p.77 Benjamin Marshall's ferry across Chattahoochee River at present site
of Columbus, GA mentioned in 1819. Also mentions homes of Samuel, Joseph,
and James Marshall in Georgia.

p.121 In 1798 Joseph Marshall was listed among the Indian traders in the
Creek Nation [East Alabama].

Given the time frame, these could be some of our Marshall kin. Any thoughts?

This is the story of one line of Hurts--the information on the part of
the
Hurt line in England was provided by Michael Hurt, now livinig at
Castern
Hall, Derbyshire, near Ashbourne, Staffordshire, from the "Pedigree of
the
Hurts of Bristol"

[Michael Hurt] said that in the late 1500s a branch of the Ashbourne
family had migrated to Bristol England, and that circa 1650 a member of
that famiy had come to Virginia.

"Pedigree of Hurts of Bristol" compiled by the Windosr Herald in 1819
from
the records of the College of Arms, London:

I. Robert Hurt of Ashbourne died 1583.
Child:
II. Thomas Hurt of Ashbourne and Bristol, Mayor of Bristol in 1602
(Living in
1634) married Alice, dau of Ragar [sic] Millard

Children: Roger, William [see below], Thomas
     b. William Hurt of Dover, Kent County married Rebecca Colway.
          Children: Ralph, William, John.

Note: William son of of Thomas [and Martha Winston] and grandson of
Thomas Hurt
of Bristol is believed to be the William who came to Virginia; because
it
is nore likely that an immigrant would be coming from Bristol rather tha
n Dover.

Hi Y'all

I am trying to clean up and also complete some of my files and ran across
one that I found in the Mathis book and is from North Carolina.

Do any of you have available any information pertaining to a Will of
William Burt, Sr. recorded in Will Book 1, Page 8, Greenville Co., NC in
the 1783 time frame? According to the Mathis book this was one of the sons
of Richard Burt the Elder.

Incidentally, I have contacted two sons of Robert Mathis, the author of
that book "The Mathew Burt Family . . . " and I have a copy of the book on
order. Hence I will have the complete book as a reference if any one might
have a need for extracts thereof.

Kind regards and thanks for whatever help you might provide.

Barbara

I found some information this week which certainly has helped in
identifying the Richard Burt guys in York County.

I have included Time line update info for inclusion, adding, or whatever.

We are apparently going to get some winter time weather soon, like maybe
tonight.

Y'all take care in this kind of weather.

Include a check for $8.00 FOR EACH WILL REQUESTED (this is the look-up fee)

They will either send you a copy of the will -- or will send you a form

Hope this helps.

Subj:	Marshall & Burt

Sarah, Barbara, John, Bill, Lea, & Joan,

Hello to all of you - that is if I can manage to get this message to all of you.
Yes, I'd most definately like to join your group of Marshall & Burt researchers.
Thanks Barbara and Sarah for the invitation.

This is the initial query that I put out -
I'm trying to find out if my Marshalls tie in with the Halifax Co. NC
Marshalls. I have John Marshall b 15 Mar 1785, d 27 Apr 1839 in Pike Co.
GA. John Married 1st Rebecca Burt (possibly Halifax Burts?) in Putnam
Co. GA Feb 1811. I've collected a lot of information of Marshalls and
Burts in NC & GA but have been unable to tie my lines in with any of the
others. Please help if you can.

At this point I'd like to add the following:
My John Marshall and Rebecca had one child, Pendleton Jones Marshall b 7 Jan
1812. (I thought at first that his name might be a clue, but then
discovered that John and Rebecca were married by a man named Pendleton
Jones). Rebecca died 7 June 1812. John Marshall then married Elizabeth
Wright in Pike Co. GA.
John and Elizabeth had the following children:
Mary Ann Matilda, Martha Caroline, Stephen Wright, Emaline Rina, John
Wesley, Elizabeth Hamel, Elizabeth Amanda Priscila, James Madison, and
Adaline. (Stephen seems to be a family name that keeps coming up).

In 1828, Pike County Ga. Court records,
John Marshall was appointed guardian of the property of Pendleton Jones
Marshall, for what Pendleton Jones has coming to him from the estate of John
Burt, late of the State of Alabama. Bond and security was $1200.00. From
this I surmise that John Burt is the father of Rebecca Burt, first wife of
John Marshall.

I've been doing research for a number of years and going to Salt Lake to
research once a year for about the last 15 years or so. While in Salt Lake
I've accumulated quite a bit of info on the Burts and Marshalls in Georgia
(mostly Putman Co). I have also copies parts of the "Genealogical Abstracts
of Wills 1758 - 1824 Halifax County, North Carolina, part of the book John
Marshall, Sr. of Brunswick Co. Va. 1732 - 1956. This is John Marshall who d
in Warren Co. NC., with Marshall Family notes. What I'm trying to say is
that I'd really like to contribute something to the group. If any of this
is new to you, I'll pass it on, but I don't want to just give you info that
you already have. Please let me know. Again, thanks for including me.
Hopefully I will be able to get this to all of you.

Sybil Louise BURT (1922-1982), was born in DeKalb County, Alabama. Her gg
grandfather, Elijah BURT (1808-1879), moved from Franklin County, TN to
Dekalb County, AL in the 1830s. He is listed as born in Georgia in the

Lea,

Received your message this morning. I guess I was successful at getting my
message out to all of you. I'm learning something new every day. Have any
of you ever run across any mention of other heirs of my John Burt who died
in Alabama? I can't believe that my Pendleton Jones is the only one out there.

Now Lea... I've been going through my papers to see what I have that fits in
with your line. You have to remember that this is from other peoples work
and I have no idea whether they are correct or not. I always doubt other
work until I can verify it, but I'm also very happy to find anything that
may help.

From the wills of Halifax Co. NC, I'm assuming that your David is Will #330,
1 Nov 1784. Names children William, Stephen, Catharine, Lucy, Anna, Mary,
Janny, Susan, Betsey, Sarah and Pattey. Extrs: Samuel Marshall and son
Stephen. Is this correct? This family is also list in Georgia Bible
Records by Jeannette Holland Austin (names a little different). The Stephen
married Elizabeth Burt.
I think this is the Putnam Co. GA family, that my John Marshall somehow ties
in with.

From a book called the Marshall Family, I have John Marshall, will dated 17
Jul 1782, probated 14 Nov 1785 in Mecklenburg Co. VA. m Rebecca. "John and
his wife sold the 300 acres left him by his father, to Edward Parish of
Cumberland Co., 14 Aug, 1776 (Deed Book 5, p.430,482). They resided in the
parish of St. James, Mecklenburg Co. VA." It shows the children mentioned
in the will as Lucy, Samuel, James, Benjamin, Ann, and two females who
married - Ingram and - Hooper. This particular book shows that this John
Marshall is the son of William Marshall, b 1707, lived in Cumberland Co. VA,
will dated 2 Oct 1768 in Parish of Southam, Cumberland Co. VA. No mention
of where that comes from.

This John Marshall had a brother William who married Lucy Good. Under
William there is a note stating "were these the parents of Jesse Marshall?
That Jesse was born in Nov 1765 in Brunswick Co., VA....
Their known children were William, Andrew J., and Anderson, possibly other
sons were Sterling, Richard, and David (?)." (I don't know if the writer
means sons of William or Jesse here).

I was going to include notes from the John Marshall of Brunswick Co. VA, but
it's so confusing, that I'm going to have to sort out the people first. Will
do more later.
Sandy

I am passing this on to open up discussion on the Marshall lineage. As
David Marshall was NOT named in his possible father's will, I am accepting
it only with a great deal of preponderance and association. The only REAL
clue that David left was naming his brother, Samuel Marshall. Please do
not accept this as an absolute.

Anyway, this is how I have figured it. All comments are welcomed.

Thanks,
Lea

Sandy,

I have tried to follow the children that I could. However, they appear to
have left Halifax Co., NC. Here are his children, maybe this will give
further clues if we can pick them up in GA.

Barbara,

I just got a letter from another Burt cousin! He is Capt. Kenneth O. Merkel
of Enterprise, AL; e-mail: merkelk@ns.awanet.com He is a descendant of
Stephen R. Burt and Kitty Billingsley, through dau. Julia Ann Burt who
married Joseph M. Speer. He said he has the Billingsley family traced back
to the early 1300s.

I am about to e-mail him as soon as I finish this message. He does have
some errors in the material he sent me. he has the parents of Stephen R,
Burt as Dr. Stephen Martin Burt and Ann H. Reed. That must be the son of
John Burt! They may be the wrong parents, but he may have some info on
John's line. He had seen my charts at the Autauga Heritage Center vertical
files and questioned my use of Stephen Richard Burt, he believes the middle
name to be Reed. I'll have to check my notes on that one. He also lists
wife of Clement Billingsley as Rebecca Barker. I had not seen that name
beore. I'll let you know what I find out.

John

Hi Ken,

It is great to hear from another Burt cousin. There is getting to be quite
a sizable group of us on the Net. Welcome to the group!

I will try to answer some of your questions as best as I can. "Old
Washington" was the first county seat of Autauga county. It was located
south of Prattville on the Alabama River. It is now a ghost town. You
cannot get there any longer without getting clearance from the paper mill
which owns all that land. Vernon was located near Autaugaville. The
Washington/Vernon Road ran between those two towns in lower Autauga county.
I do not know where the graves of Ann Read Burt and William Burt are
located. They are probably located near the site of Washington and unmarked.

I am not sure about the location of "Big Hungry". I will ask Larry Nobles
next time I see him. He is the authority on Autauga history. The Union
Baptist Church began by the Colemans was believed to have been located near
the Burt and Coleman homesteads on Lower Kingston Rd. near Prattville. By
the way, another Burt researcher and I have been trying to locate a
possible lost Burt cemetery in that area. There is a Coleman cemetery in
the woods off Lower Kingston (behind the Martin Burt Cemetery). If Joseph
Burt were buried there, his grave is unmarked.

I will have to check my notes on Stephen Richard Burt to see where I found
his middle name. It may have come from Robert S. Coleman of Virginia. He is
a descendant of S. R. Burt and Kitty Billingsley, through daugher Lydia Ann
Burt and Andrew Jackson Coleman. I am very interested in your Billingsley
information. We have numerous Billingsley connections in the family. I am
also doing some research for a friend who also has Billingsley connections.
I have generally seen the wife of Clement as Cynthia Turner. Where did you
get the information on Rebecca Barker?

I do have to point out one error in the information that you sent. The
parents of Stephen R. Burt were Joseph Burt, Jr. and Ann Read. Stephen
Martin Burt was probablly the son of Joseph's brother, John. Barbara
Goodson and I would be very interested in any information you have on
Stephn M. Burt. We are having much trouble tracking down that family. (I
am forwarding a recent mailing from Barbara).

If you haven't already, you might want to check out the Autauga county
genweb page that Barbara does. It has several researchable databases,
including Autauga Cemetery records, Marriage Records, land records, etc.

Barbara is also working on a Burt homepage. It is under contruction, but
check it out

Good hunting,
John

Hi Barbara and John

I received my copy of John's message to you, Barbara, concerning the
information of those Lowndes County marriages of some Burt people of the
1830s-1850s.

At the beginning of those data, there is the reference: CAGS, Vol. 12, No.
1, 28 Jan 1986.

May I ask for the full name of CAGS, please.

Incidentally, I now have a copy of a deed from York County in which a
daughter of Richard Burt the Junior clearly states that Richard Jr married
a Catherine, that Richard Burt the elder married Elizabeth Hansford.
Further that Richard Junior was the sole heir of the marriage of Elizabeth
H. to Richard the elder. This daughter also identifies her two sisters.

By a copy of the Will of Philip Moody identifying three granddaughters by
these same names, the Catherine, wife of Richard Burt the Junior, was
Catherine Moody.

Since the will of Richard Burt the elder identifies more than just these
three children of Richard the junior, he, the elder, had to have married
again. My belief is that he also married a daughter of Philip Moody. I have
no actual proof as of now. Father and son marrying sisters?

Y'all take care.

Bill A
