Sam F. McClure did research on his ancestors and wrote a thesis for his
Master of Science degree at East Texas State University in December 1977.
This book covers the settlement of Northeast Texas and Southeast Oklahoma
by following the life of Jesse Shelton, who helped settle Miller County,
Arkansas Territory; Red River County; Texas and Lamar County, Texas while
following the frontier. At the time he founded Fort Shelton in Lamar
County, Texas in 1837, it was one of the most exposed settlements on the
western edge of the frontier in Northeast Texas.
