"Prisoners who died at Andersonville Prison (1864-1865) - Atwater List ." Private Dorance Atwater, 2nd NY Cavalry (1865 [reprint 1981 by National Society of Andersonville]). This 74 page reprint covers the death of around 12,000 Union troops that died at Andersonville Prison in Andersonville, GA which was at the end of the supply train line of the Confederate Army. The majority of the prisoner's died of dysentery and diarrhea. The prison is just east of Plains, GA (President Carter's home). More that 45,000 prisoners passed thru the gates. The chapters are in state order and it gives the grave number, name, company, death date and cause of death. MB2

The book also tells the History and Development of the Cemetery. "The Journal of James H. Hodam: Sketches and Personal Reminiscences of the Civil War as Experienced by a Confederate Soldier." James H. Hodam, 16 May 1901. This version edited by Robert P. Hodam, 1995, self-published. James H. Hodam was raised with a family tradition of note-taking and diary keeping. This book includes some personal history of growing up in Roane Co., (W)VA where he spent most of his youth until joining the Confederate forces at age 18 in August 1862. James also kept personal rosters of the men he served with, especially in winter camps, during the Civil War. He briefly describes his life directly after the war and his eventual move to IL. There is also some genealogical data on this branch of the Hodam family. DG
