Haute-Vienne

"Ennemies en France - Oradour-sur-Glane." Archives du Service de Recherche des Crimes de Guerre Ennemies, Paris 1945. Virtually the entire population of the town of Oradour-sur-Glane, in the Haute-Vienne region of France, was massacred June 10, 1944 by members of the German 2nd SS Panzer Division, "Das Reich". This book contains testimony gathered from the handful of survivors as well as the eyewitnesses of the aftermath of the massacre. It contains the name, birthdate or age, birthplace, occupation and last residence of each of the 642 officially recognised victims. In the case of some individuals, there are more details of their lives, personalities and deaths. Many people from outlying areas surrounding the town, along with refugees who had come from other areas of France most notably Alsace and Lorraine, and even Spanish nationals who had fled civil war in thier own country, also lost their lives in this massacre, so the scope is not as narrow as one might think. The burned out remains of Oradour-sur-Glane are now a National Monument in France. Visitors are greeted with a simple phrase, Souviens-toi ~ Remember. KB6
