It would appear that a Stationary Engineer is an engineer in charge of steam and other mechanical equipment that is not a part of the railroad, including fire department engineers. This directory covers Indianapolis, Anderson, Columbus, Crawfordsville, Daleville, Edenburg (Edinburgh?), Fordville (Fortville?), Frankton, Juliett (?), Marion, Muncie, Shelbyville, Wabash, and Yorktown. Most entries for Indianapolis, Anderson, and Muncie show the person's name, address, employer, and employer's address. Most other entries just have name, city, and employer.
