"Biographical Dictionary of American Science." Elliott, Clark A., Greenwood Press, 1979. Contains short biographies of men and women who contributed to science and mathematics in the US. Birthdates range from 1609 to 1867. Information commonly includes birth date and place, death dates, parents, other relatives, education and field of study, and accomplishments. A wide range of scince/math contributors is included, from those who were self taught observers with ordinary educations (and possibly no education) to highly educated and trained scientists. KJ1

Gives some information (sometimes name of spouse, birth, death or immigration dates) as a means of identifying the individual, and references the works that contain proof of descent - for instance, Sir Edward Burke "Burke's Landed Gentry" 1939. (some of these books might be hard to come by). L4

"Encyclopedia of American Biography." Winfield Scott Downs, The American Historical Society, Inc., 1938. This wonderfully published work contains over 1,000 biographies of Americans from the turn of the 20th century. Each biography is quite lengthy and many contain an acommpanying photo of the individual. The book contains an index of names which I'm currently working on developing in digital forum. This book contains 490 pages. I believe this book is out of copywrite. I have not found The American Historical Society Inc. I don't think it exists anymore. If you are looking for a particular issue or run of issues of a given pre-1820 newspaper this is an invaluable resource. When writing please state the location and range of years for which you are seeking newspapers, as well as you location so that I may advise you of which area libraries may hold newspapers of interest to you. Info on Medal of Honor Winners from first medal and including all the wars US was in to the last one. 238 pages of great info. Lists of what ship and/or commands had what numbers of medals per unit and including some personal info about the men, ship, or the command. This is copyrighted by Turner Publishing Co, Nashvill, TN and I just called them and as long as I do not give info word by word that is in the book it is ok to do this and I can give the info to those asking about it. "Containing an account of the astronomical and other phenomena, a vast amount of Information respecting the government, finances, population, commerce and general statistics of the various nations of the world with special reference to the British Empire and the United States." There is NO surname index in this reference book. You must be able to tell me that your ancestor was, for example, a baronet, a knight, an MP, a Civil Servant, worked in a Naval Dockyard, was an officer in the Army or Navy or held a position of some importance in a public school, religion, or national organisation if I am to be able to find him. "Index of Revolutionary War Pension Applications in the National Archives - Bicentennial Edition." National Genealogical Society, Arlington, VA 1976. This is an INDEX of Revolutionary War Pension Applications and Bounty Land Warrents on the Federal level. These are not the pensions themselves. It gives a file number and persons name. CTS

"Index to U.S. Invalid Pension Records 1801-1815." Clark. Murtie June, Genealogical Publishing Company, 1991. This index is said to contain information which does not appear in the Pension List of 1813 or the Pension List of 1818. According to the Guide to Genealogical Research in the National Archives, "many of these pensioners were Revolutionary War veterans whose papers were presumably destroyed in the War Department fires of 1800 and 1814." This index is based on a War Department account book, or ledger, showing the amount of semi-annual payments made in March and September to each pensioner for each year of the reporting period, 1801-1815. During the period covered, pensions were paid to well over 2,000 Revolutionary veterans and to several hundred officers and soldiers who served in the frontier wars after 1783. "Heroes All!" Harry R. Stringer (Editor) Fassett Publishing Co., Washington, D.C. Copyright, 1919. As of 1919, The United States Government had three military honors with which it rewarded it's soldiers and citizens who served with marked distinction in time of war. They are the Congressional Medal of Honor, The Distinguished Service Cross and the Distinguised Service Medal. The Medal of Honor and the Distinguished Service Cross are awarded for Valor; the distinguished Service Medal for conspicuous service in a position of great trust and responsibility. The names recorded in this book are soldiers and citizens of the United States and of the Allies whom were bestowed the medals in the three categories for extrodinary heroism in action and meritorious service in the line of duty during WWI. "Powder River!" Ler-et-buck Lester O Kellogg, no publisher or date listed. This is a book of poetry about being in the 91st division. At the end of the book there are several pages of the names of the members of the 91st division, 316 Ammunition Train. United States pilots, observers, gunners and mechanics who flew against the enemy in the War of 1914-1918. Gives names and dates of service at the Front, in the Squadrons and at the Naval/Marine Corps Air Stations, plus those Americans who served in the air directly with the British and French from the beginning of the War until November 11, 1918.
