Samuel was the fourth child of Mary
Jane Plummer and Hiram Lewis Allen and was born on April 10, 1860, in Sutter's Creek,
Amador County, California. Samuel relocated to Kern County in 1866 and died in Bakersfield
on July 19, 1936. According to The Californian's Old Timer Series Samuel accompanied the
first women to climb Mt. Whitney in 1883. The group consisted of Jack Jameson, Ella
Jameson, Samuel Plummer Allen, Ella Rener (spelling questionable) and Jeff Carver.
The group left a record of the ascent in a baking powder can.
