The Chico Chapter, organized in 1922 and the Willows Chapter, organized in 1919, combined their membership in 1996.

GOALS AND ACTIVITIES

The three objectives of our national organization are “historic preservation,” “promotion of education,” and “patriotic endeavor.” The Chico Chapter has been actively pursuing these goals since 1922, and the Willows Chapter, which was absorbed by the Chico Chapter in 1996, has pursued the very same goals since 1919.

HISTORIC PRESERVATION
  • Donated to Angel Island Immigration Center
  • Donated to state and national World War II memorials and the World War II Memory Book
  • Participated in the Statue of Liberty restoration in 1985 (NSDAR raised enough money to be a corporate donor)
  • Contributed to the preservation of the Bayliss Library, the only rural Carnegie Library in the country
  • Contributed to the Veterans Memorial wall in the downtown Chico park
  • Provided speakers on the DAR Museum collections
  • Sponsors ongoing conservation projects and activities; presents conservation awards

PROMOTION OF EDUCATION
  • Contributes to local Native American groups
  • Organizes annual Patriotic Essay and Public Speaking Contest at Chico High School
  • Recognizes individuals for outstanding local volunteer activity with DAR Community Service awards
  • Presents annual Good Citizens awards to students from 16 high schools in Butte, Glenn and Tehama Counties
  • Honored outstanding graduate of the Naval Sea Cadets
  • Planted Heritage Trees at Marsh Junior High and at Biggs High School
  • Sponsors eligible students for DAR scholarships
  • Sponsors knowledge of American history in youth through the DAR American History Essay Contest in grades 5-8
  • Collects labels to donate to DAR-sponsored schools

 

PATRIOTIC ENDEAVOR
  • Coordinated the City of Chico celebration in 1932 for George Washington’s birthday
  • Donated to and volunteered at Martinez and San Francisco VA hospitals and Yountville Veterans Home
  • Participates in Independance Day, Memorial Day, and Veterans Day ceremonies in several local communities
  • Presents flags to youth and civic groups, including the Chico and Paradise libraries, Girl Scouts, Boy Scouts, veterans, and area schools
  • Promotes Constitution Week in September
  • Contributes to Project Patriot
