Who We Are

The Escondido Genealogical Society (EGS) has met continuously since it was organized in 1975. Some of us are new to genealogy. Some of us have been doing genealogy for a few years. Some are young. Some are old. But we all help each other. Here are our brochure and promotional flyer.

Our Meetings

MEETINGS Speakers with expertise in various aspects of genealogy present programs of interest at monthly meetings. Workshops are taught by known lecturers, authors and researchers. The meetings are held in the Turrentine Room which is on the second floor of the Escondido Public Library located at 239 S. Kalmia, Escondido, CA. . Exceptions are: February we have a lunch time meeting in a local restaurant and in December there is a Holiday Potluck dinner. In June, a picnic is held. Members are notified of any changes in time or location via the newsletter or a calling tree. The meetings are free and open to the public.

Our Newsletters

Newsletters EGS produces a bimonthly newsletter to inform its members of future programs and special events. It also contains various articles. Ideas and/or articles for the newsletter are welcomed, please contact the newsletter editor. A newsletter is not sent during July/August when the club takes its summer break.

Our Publication

Each year the Society publishes the Hidden Valley Journal (HVJ), which contains information about family and local history, research techniques, computer genealogy and tips on preservation.  Members are encouraged to submit material for this journal. The HVJ is sent to members, and is traded nationally with other genealogical organizations. We have old copies of the HVJ available for sale on our Store page. We also have available an On-line Index to all the articles in the Hidden Valley Journal for the years 1977-2014.

Spring Cleaning??? Are you cleaning out your bookshelves to make room for new books? This is your chance to help libraries and others. We are looking for old Hidden Valley Journals. If you have copies of 1995 and older editions that you would like to donate, contact Barbara Wickham or turn them into the Pioneer Room of the Escondido City Library to the attention of EGS.

How We Assist Others

The Society purchases genealogical reference books, microfiche and microfilms which are donated to the Pioneer Room of the Escondido City Library. The Pioneer Room houses the collection of the Escondido Genealogical Society and other Society/Organizations. The Pioneer Room is located at 247 S. Kalmia St. Escondido, CA 92025 and can be reached at (760) 839-4315.     Map    Hours

Some of our members volunteer their time to build the Escondido Obituaries Index and Escondido Vital Record Announcement Index on our Escondido Internet Databases page.

And some of our members will look up the actual Obituary or Vital Record Announcement and mail it to you for a small fee. See our Look-ups page for more information.

Join Us

Those living in the Escondido area that are interested in studying family history and genealogy are invited to join our organization. We also welcome people from all over who are researching their ancestors from Escondido to become members. By joining they help us financially with our volunteer work in Escondido genealogy. Members are entitled to participate in the business of the Society, to vote, receive the bimonthly newsletter and the Hidden Valley Journal.

Our Surnames

The names our members are researching are many. Perhaps they are the sames as yours. Take a look at some of our member's names on Our Surnames page.

Our Web Sites

Some of our members have their own web sites. A link to them are available on our Links page.

Our Fund Raising

Escondido Genealogical Society participates in the Ralphs / Food4Less Community Contributions program. If you shop at Ralphs Grocery Store or Food4Less, you can set up your Ralphs or Food4Less Reward Card so that EGS gets a rebate for every dollar spent. See our Ralphs page for more information.

Escondido Genealogical Society participated in the Points for Profit program to raise money up until it folded in 2009. Thanks to Jane Fazio who ran this program for the club for many years. A new program called Proof of Purchase is expected to replace the PFP program.

From January 2008 to September 2008, the EGS participated in the Federation of Genealogical Societies' (FGS) Family Tree Magazine Fund Raiser Program. In September of 2008, Family Tree Magazine discontinued the program.
