Who We Are

The Escondido Genealogical Society (EGS) has met continuously since it was organized in 1975. Some of us are new to genealogy. Some of us have been doing genealogy for a few years. Some are young. Some are old. But we all help each other. EGS produces a bimonthly newsletter to inform its members of future programs and special events. Here are samples of our newsletters and brochure.

Our Meetings

MEETINGS Speakers with expertise in various aspects of genealogy present programs of interest at monthly meetings. Workshops are taught by known lecturers, authors and researchers. The meetings are held in the Turrentine Room which is on the second floor of the Escondido Public Library located at 239 S. Kalmia, Escondido, CA. . Exceptions are: February we have a lunch time meeting in a local restaurant and in December there is a Holiday Potluck dinner. In June, a picnic is held. Members are notified of any changes in time or location via the newsletter or a calling tree. The meetings are free and open to the public.

Our Publication

Each year the Society publishes the Hidden Valley Journal (HVJ), which contains information about family and local history, research techniques, computer genealogy and tips on preservation.  Members are encouraged to submit material for this journal. The HVJ is sent to members, and is traded nationally with other genealogical organizations. We have old copies of the HVJ available for sale on our Store page. We also have available an On-line Index to all the articles in the Hidden Valley Journal for the years 1977-2008.

Spring Cleaning??? Are you cleaning out your bookshelves to make room for new books? This is your chance to help libraries and others. We are looking for old Hidden Valley Journals. If you have copies of 1995 and older editions that you would like to donate, contact Barbara Wickman or turn them into the Pioneer Room of the Escondido City Library to the attention of EGS.

How We Assist Others

The Society purchases genealogical reference books, microfiche and microfilms which are donated to the Pioneer Room of the Escondido City Library. The Pioneer Room houses the collection of the Escondido Genealogical Society and other Society/Organizations. The Pioneer Room is located at 247 S. Kalmia St. Escondido, CA 92025 and can be reached at (760) 839-4315.     Map    Hours
