Page 246 Son of John C. and Theodora Artz, was born January 26, 1832, near Dresden, Germany. He arrived in Osage County, Missouri, in March, 1837; afterwards moved to Cole County. In 1854 he crossed the plains with an ox team. For four years he engaged alternately in quartz mining and wood chopping in Amador County. In 1872 he moved to his present home, where he has since resided. His farm contains three hundred and twenty acres of excellent land, under a high state of cultivation. On the 20th of May, 1866, Mr. Artz was married to Elizabeth Toerni, a native of South Switzerland. They have six children, all living, viz.: Annie E., born April 7, 1867; John H., born January 26, 1869; Geo. W., born August 1, 1870; May Emma, born September 6, 1872; Frank H. born January 24, 1874; Eda Christina, born July 29, 1876. His farm is situated seven miles from Sacramento, a mile and a half from Florin, and on the line of the Central Pacific Railroad.
