	Born in Virginia, July 5, 1830. When but a child, his parents 
moved to Missouri, where the subject of this sketch lived on a farm until 1846. 
His parents, both being dead, he engaged in brick laying, which he followed in 
Missouri until 1850, when he crossed the plains to California with mule-teams, 
arriving at Hangtown (Placerville), August 9th of the above-mentioned year. Mr. 
Beatie commenced at once to mine, which he followed until the fall of 1852, when 
he came to Sonoma county and again commenced work at his trade, which he 
followed until November 19, 1857; he then came to Mendocino county and settled 
on a farm, consisting of one hundred and sixty acres, located about three and a 
half miles south from Ukiah, where he followed farming as well as brick-laying 
until the fall of 1867, when he moved to the opposite side of the river, and 
about six miles from Ukiah, where he has since resided. Having given up 
brick-laying, Mr. Beatie has turned his whole attention to farming and 
hop-growing. Married, December 1, 1853, Miss Lucy Chambers, a native of Ohio. By 
this marriage they have five living children: Andrew S., Charles M., Susan L., 
Leonard C., and Lucy. They have lost two, James W., and Thomas J.
