BELCHER was born in Worcester County, Massachusetts, April 20, 1858. His father, Gilbert J. Belcher, a blacksmith and carriage maker by trade, was born near Boston. His mother is also a native of Massachusetts. She now resides in Monrovia, California. Of their three children, Charles H., the subject of this sketch, was the second born Another son, Fred G., is a manufacture in San Francisco. Mr. Belcher commenced his business life as a traveling salesman for a furniture house of Worcester, Massachusetts; came west in 1885 and clerked for the well known furniture house of Chabourne & Co. , San Francisco, and was subsequently a clerk in the Golden Rule Bazaar. In 1886 he came to Tehachapi and purchased and located on eight acres of land, the east half of the northeast quarter of section 14, township 32, south range 31 east, located in Bear valley.
