BRAINARD Transcribed by: Nancy Pratt Melton This file is part of the California Genealogy & History Archives http://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~cagha/index.htm FRANKLIN TOWNSHIP PAGE 258. lives eight miles from Sacramento; owns forty-five acres; was born in Ohio in 1827, and lived there until 1840; he then moved to Illinois, and remained until 1849; in that year he removed to Indiana; subsequently he traveled over the Western States until 1861, engaged as a photographer and dentist. He served in the army from 1861 to 1863; then, returning to Illinois, he lived in Chicago until 1870, when he came to California, and settled in this county; he owns and keeps the pretty wayside home, known as �The Union House;� he has a fine public-hall over his dining-room, size fifty by twenty-five feet; the floor is made to spring; the first entertainment held in it was a party on July 4, 1874. Mr. Brainard was married in 1851 to Sarah Elam, a native of Indiana; they have one child a daughter. His land and improvements are worth about five thousand dollars.
