was born in Utica, N. Y., in May, 1829, and there remained until 1833, when, 
with his parents, he moved to Michigan, residing there until 1842.  In this year 
he went to Illinois, and worked at his trade of a mason at Chicago, Bloomington, 
Peoria, and finally settled there.  In 1855 he moved to Livingston county, Mo., 
where he resided until 1862, when he crossed the Plains to California, and 
settled at Woodland, Yolo county, and there established a brick-yard, combining 
this business with that of a contractor.  At the end of two years he moved to 
Santa Rose, Sonoma county, and there erected a flour mill, with water power, on 
Markwest creek.  This enterprise he conducted for five years, when, in 1869, he 
sold his property and came to Vallejo, where he has since resided.  Was 
appointed Quarterman-mason on the Navy Yard at Mare Island, July 22, 1872, and 
is still employed there.  He married July 22, 1851, Julia A. Michael, of 
Bloomington, Ills.
