Page 271. lives in Elk Grove, fifteen miles from Sacramento; was born in Connecticut in 1833, and lived there until 1853; he learned the painter's trade there; came to this State in that year, and settled in this county; he followed mining a few months. He commenced in the same year, in Sacramento, the business of raising buildings, being the first to undertake the moving of brick buildings. In 1869 he moved to San Francisco, and was engaged in the same business there for two years; he then moved to Elk Grove, and, with the exception of a short time in the employ of Railroad, has been in the hotel business ever since.
