Sacramento Valley Biographies DANIEL CAINE Transcribed by Sally Kaleta, August 2009. This file is part of the California Genealogy & History Archives http://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~cagha/index.htm The associations of Daniel Caine with Yuba county have extended from the early pioneer days to the prosperous present, his participation in agricultural affairs resulting in a competency for himself, as well as adding materially to the development of the general community. He is a native of County Derry, Ireland, born in April, 1831, and remained in the Emerald Isle until he was nineteen years old. Interested in the opportunities held out by the western world, he decided to emigrate and accordingly came to the United States in 1850. He located in Pennsylvania, where he engaged as a shoemaker, which trade he had learned in Ireland, continuing so occupied for two and a half years. He then made the trip to California via the Panama route and upon his arrival located in Grass Valley and engaged in mining. In 1854 he located at Sucker Flat, near Smartville, Yuba county, where he owned a fourth interest in a claim on the Yuba river. This he worked for about four years with fair success, when he sold out and invested his accumulated earnings in cattle, which he proceeded to graze in Nevada county. Returning to Yuba county he located in the vicinity of Smartville, but during the floods of 1861 and '62 he lost a large number of cattle. Following this misfortune he endured many hardships and privations, losing his stock by starvation and meeting with other reverses. Perseverance and energy, however, were fruitful of returns and he finally overcame the obstacles in his way, since which time he has acquired a competence. From a modest beginning in land he has added to his property until he now owns five hundred and sixty-seven acres, for many years devoted to general ranching, while he also rented seven hundred acres for the cultivation of grain. Up to within two years ago he remained actively identified with the agricultural and stock interests of this section, but at that time had the misfortune to break his leg and has since been a partial cripple. In the mean-time he has sold off his stock and rented the ranch to his sons, and is now living retired from the active cares which have so long engrossed his attention. Mr. Caine has been twice married, the first ceremony being performed in 1858, and uniting him with Bridget Dougherty, a native of Ireland, who came to the United States in girlhood. At her death in February 1867, she left a family of five children, two others having died in infancy. Those living are as follows: Margaret, the wife of Louis Heckison; Annie, wife of William Casdill; Jane, wife of J. J. McGrath; and Richard and Daniel, both ranchers of Yuba county. August 6, 1876, Mr. Caine was married to Mrs. Ellen (Casetto) Judge, a native of County Longford, Ireland, and their one daughter, Mary, is now the wife of Stephen Curry. On national issues, Mr. Caine is a strong Democrat, but is liberal in local affairs. The family are actively identified with the Roman Catholic Church.
