	A native of Maine. Was born September 24, 1853. Here he spent his 
boyhood, and when ten years of age he, with his mother, his father having died, 
came via Panama to California, arriving at San Francisco in January, 1863. Here 
they spent about two months, and then proceeded to Washington Territory. Here 
the subject of this sketch served an apprenticeship at the shoe-making trade. In 
1872 we find him engaged in the sheep business, traveling through Oregon, Idaho, 
and Montana. He finally brought up at Salt Lake, where he spent about six months 
at his trade.  In November, 1873, he established a boot and shoe store in 
Virginia City. This he conducted until November, 1875, when he came to Mendocino 
county and established a similar store in Ukiah, where he has since remained. 
Through fair dealing and being possessed of good business qualities, Mr. Colson 
has built up a good trade. His mother died in Washington Territory, July 5, 
1875. Mr. Colson married, June 5, 1880, Miss Frances A. Redemeyer, daughter of 
A. F. Redemeyer of Ukiah, who was born at Santa Rosa, on the 22d day of 
November, 1860.
