Page 272. lives twelve miles from Sacramento and two miles from Elk Grove---his Post Office; was born in Germany in 1818, and lived there until 1850, engaged in farming; he emigrated to the United States in that year, and engaged in farming in Madison County, Illinois until 1853; he started across the plains June 1 of that year, with cattle and sheep for California; spent the following winter in Salt Lake. City; he resumed his journey May 1, 1854, and arrived in this State in July; he settled with his stock near Stockton, and followed farming and dairying about eighteen months. He moved to this county in April, 1856, and settled where he has since lived, and is still engaged in farming, stock-raising and dairying; owns four hundred and eighty acres of land, worth with improvements about $15,000. Mr. Dickson was married in 1850 to Miss F. Stapel, also a native of Germany. They have living four sons and two daughters. A view of his ranch is given on another page.
