C., May 22, 1846. Educated at Furman University, Greenville, S. C., and the State Military Academy, Charleston. Served in the battalion of State Cadets during last year of the Civil War, chiefly engaged in the defence of Charleston. Graduated from Furman University in 1867; came to California in 1868 and assumed the work of public-school teaching, in which he has continued for thirty-eight years; Principal Santa Rosa High School from 1874 to 1884; for twenty-two years past mem. of faculty of the State Normal School, Los Angeles; in 1906 and 1909, elected a member of the Los Angeles Board of Education; Auditor of the great Los Angeles Aqueduct from the beginning of the enterprise to July 1st, 1910, Elected Asst. Supt. of Schools for Los Angeles City in June 1910. Has been a Deacon in the Baptist church since 1874.
