This file is part of the California Genealogy & History Archives http://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~cagha/index.htm Born in Holstein, Germany, September 21, 1843, Claus Eggert has found his success in life as an agriculturist in California, being located in the vicinity of Dixon, Solano County. His father, Johan Eggert, was a native of Germany, where he lived and died, engaging as a farmer for a livelihood. He and his wife, who also spent her entire life in the Fatherland, were the parents of six children, three sons and three daughters, of whom Claus Eggert is the third in order of birth. He received his education in the common schools of his native country, where he remained until 1869, engaging in farming with his father for a part of the time. Deciding to immigrate to America, in 1869 he located in San Francisco, Cal., where he remained two weeks. Coming to Solano county, he found his first employment as a farm hand in the vicinity where he now lives, and with the passing years was able to save sufficient means to enable him to purchase property. In 1892 he made his first purchase and since that time has continued to add to his original acreage, until today he owns nine hundred and forty acres, of which six hundred acres are given over to the cultivation of barley, two hundred acres to wheat and forty acres to hay, the remainder devoted to pasturage for his stock. In 1895 he built a handsome residence two stories in height and fitted it up in a modern style, and also has erected large and convenient outbuildings, bringing his property to rank with the best in this section. In 1883, in this vicinity, Mr. Eggert was united in marriage with Mrs. Lena (Jahn) Stick, a native of Holstein, Germany, who died in 1903. She was the mother of three children by her second marriage, Otto, Edmund and Elda, all at home, and seven by her first marriage. Of these, Herman is located in this vicinity; Lena is the wife of Jacob Rohwer of Dixon; and Amanda is at home. Mrs. Eggert's first husband, John Stick, was a native of Germany and came as a sailor to the United States. Taking French leave of his ship in San Francisco harbor, he went to San Mateo County, later locating in Solano county, near Dixon, where, in partnership with Henry Saltzen, he was engaged in the cattle business. It was here that he met and married Miss Jahn, and later bought the old place where the family now resides. Here he carried on farming until his death in 1880. Mr. Eggert is a member of the German Lutheran Church, and politically is a Republican. For one term he served as school trustee and takes an active interest in the betterment of the community in every possible way.
