WILLIAM H. ENGLISH

        Lindsay's chief of police, William H. English, was born November 23, 
1886, in Zenia, a son of Howard and Elizabeth (McCreary) English. He received a 
good public school education and when about twenty years of age came to 
California. Locating in Visalia, he was employed for a time by Charles Riley on 
a ranch. After a few months he came to Lindsay, which city has since been his 
home. He owns a comfortable residence at No. 463 Gale Hill avenue, the product 
of his industry and frugality. For several years after coming to Lindsay he was 
employed on the adjacent ranches or in the fruit-packing houses.
        In 1912 Mr. English was appointed night watchman, which position he held 
for eight years. During that time it was observed by the citizens of Lindsay 
that he was faithful and conscientious in the performance of his duty and in 
1921 his fidelity was rewarded by his promotion to his present official position 
of chief of police. His experience while serving as night watchman taught him 
many things with regard to dealing with law-breakers, and the people of Lindsay 
are now reaping the fruits of this experience through his organization and 
management of the police force. Mr. English is a man of fine physique He owns 
twenty-five acres of land southwest of Lindsay.
        In 1916 Mr. English was united in marriage to Miss Hazel L. Warnes, a 
native of Missouri. One son, Paul Stanley English, has been born to this union 
and is now (1925) four years of age. Mr. English is a member of the Masonic 
fraternity and belongs to the Modern Woodmen of America.
