Marin County Biographies JAMES H. He wads educated at an Academy in Georgia, and graduated in law. In 1849 he came via Panama to California, arriving at San Francisco in August of the above-mentioned year. He went direct to the mines on the Yuba river; here he remained until 1854, when he returned to San Francisco, and became Register Clerk in the Custom House. He was employed in the Custom House filling different positions until 1862, since which time he has been a Custom House broker. He was a member of the Legislature during the years 1852-53 and 54. In 1869 he moved to Saucelito, where he has since resided. Mr. Gardner married August 6, 1868, Miss Virginia Thouvenin, a native of France.
