This file is part of the California Genealogy & History Archives http://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~cagha/index.htm Throughout Colusa county the name of Gregory is synonymous with enterprise, thrift and prosperity, in agricultural and financial circles standing preeminent. Characterized by the same mental vigor, business aptitude and probity that distinguished both his paternal and maternal ancestors, George William Gregory holds an assured position among the leading citizens of Arbuckle, and is everywhere respected and esteemed. He has the distinction of being a native-born resident of Colusa county, his birth having occurred August 9, 1866, near College City. His father, Henry Gregory, a son of William Gregory, was born in Tennessee, but when a young man migrated to Missouri, from there coming to California in 1854. After trying his luck at mining for a time, Henry Gregory located in Yolo county as a stock and grain raiser, but is now one of the most honored residents of Colusa county, having a large and valuable farm adjoining College City. He married Elizabeth J. Johns, and of the eight children born of their union, five are living, George William with whom this sketch is chiefly concerned, being the third child in order of birth and the only son. A more extended ancestral and parental history may be found on another page of this volume, in connection with the sketch of Henry Gregory. Brought up on the home farm, George W. Gregory first attended the district schools, completing his education at the Pierce Christian College. Choosing the free and independent occupation to which he was reared, he followed farming with his father for a few years, being subsequently engaged in stock-raising on the home ranch. For about five years Mr. Gregory devoted his attention to the breeding of thoroughbred horses, and raised some of especial note, among them being Alcantara Jr., a Hambletonian, and Alcatras, a half-brother to Aaron. In 1902 Mr. Gregory erected the Gregory warehouse, which is located in Arbuckle, east of the railroad, and is 64x300 feet, fourteen feet clear, with a capacity of ninety thousand sacks. Consolidating with Messrs. Balfour & Garrett in 1903. Mr. Gregory leased the interest of his partners in the other warehouse, which is 40x400 feet, with a capacity of seventy thousand sacks, and has since managed both with great success. In College City, Cal., August 1, 1888, Mr. Gregory married Alice Tolson, to California. Mr. and Mrs. Gregory are the parents of three children, namely: St. Elmo, Marie and Eugene. Politically Mr. Gregory is a steadfast Democrat, sustaining the principles of his party by voice and vote. He resides in Arbuckle, where he has built an attractive and comfortable residence, in which he and his wife entertain their friends in a most friendly and hospitable manner.
