When fourteen years old he began to learn the trade of baker and confectioner, at which he worked until he came to the United States in 1855. After his arrival in this country he spent three years at his trade in Dayton, Ohio. Part of the years 1858-59 he spent in Indiana, and from 1859 to 1861 in Illinois. At that time he came to California, worked one year at his trade in San Francisco, coming to Downieville in the spring of 1862. Here he ran a bakery for a year; then in company with A. C. Busch, opened a hotel. In 1865 he bought an interest in the Gold Bluff Mining Company, and worked with it for a year, when, with A. C. Busch, he bought the Sierra City ranch. They kept the hotel till 1872. At that time they opened a store, which they are now running.
