When very young, his parents emigrated to Missouri, where the subject of this sketch received his education, and was reared a farmer. In 1857 he left home and friends, and immigrated to California, crossing the plains with ox-teams, arriving in Yolo county, the following September, where he remained about six years, when he returned East via Panama. In the spring of 1864, returned by the same route, and located in Sutter county, and followed farming until 1871, when he came to this county and engaged in stock business. In 1877 went to Bartlett Springs in quest of health for his wife. After remaining there twenty-two months, returned to this county, and is now living about two and one-half miles from Hopland. Mr. Hiatt married April 5, 1864, Susan M. Calhoun, a native of Missouri. Mary S., John W., and Francis E., are the names of their children.
