Page 263 Post Office, Walnut Grove; was born in Kent County, England, in 1834, and lived there until 1846; he then went to Valparaiso, Chile, and followed a sailor's life until 1849, when he came to California, but remained only four or five months, and then returned to Chile, which he made his home till 1852, though on the sea the most of the time; he came back to California in that year, and engaged in fishing on the Sacramento River, being one of the pioneer fishermen; he followed the business until 1858. In that year he located his land on Grand Island, and has been engaged in farming; owns one hundred and seventy-seven acres, worth about ten thousand dollars; he is Freight Agent for the California Transportation Company at Walnut Grove; he has held the office of Deputy Assessor for the last four years. Mr. Holltum was married in 1859 to Miss M. J. Moulton, a native of Vermont; they have had born to them four children one son is deceased.
