        James King, a California pioneer and member of the Santa Cruz County 
Association, was born in Boone County, Missouri, March 1, 1822. He crossed the 
plains in 1849, arriving in Sacramento September 16 of that year. He did not go 
into the mines, but engaged in cattle raising for a number of years in the Santa 
Cruz Mountains.
        He is at present a resident of the city of Santa Cruz, holding the 
position of pound-master.
