At an early age he accompanied his parents to New York City, there residing and receiving his education. In 1854 he started for California; via the Nicaragua route, arriving in San Francisco July 14th of that year. After a visit to the Kern river mines, he returned to that city, and there remained until he came to Santa Clara county in July, 1855. In 1857 he commenced the butcher business, on the site of Murphy's Block, in partnership with his brother, Daniel A. Leddy, where they continued till 1859 at which time they transferred their affairs to the corner of Santa Clara street and Lightston alley, but being burned out, returned to their old stand, where they conducted their business until 1872, when they moved to their present place in the City Market Building on Market street.
