	Born in Maine, July 1, 1838. Here he received his education and 
followed as an occupation farming and teaching school, until 1860, when he 
immigrated via Panama to California. He spent the first year of California life 
working in a quartz-mill in Nevada county. In January, 1862, he returned to 
Maine via Panama. Here he followed farming until the spring of 1866, when he 
again came to California by the same route, bringing his wife with him. He went 
to Sutter county and was engaged in different occupations until the fall of 
1868, when he went to San Francisco, and in company with A. T. Pinkham, engaged 
in the grocery business. After about fifteen months, Mr. Luce disposed of his 
interests and engaged as foreman on a large ranch in Santa Barbara county. Here 
he remained one year. He then spent one year in Sutter county; after which he 
went to Butte county, and in company with three of his brothers, rented a large 
tract of land, which they conducted until the fall of 1877, when the subject of 
this sketch came to Mendocino county and located on his present place, 
consisting on one hundred and thirty acres, situated about three miles below 
Ukiah. Mr. Luce married, March 12, 1865, Miss Annice M. Pinkham, a native of 
Maine, born in Anson, 1846. Their children are: Kate E., born in San Francisco, 
February 15, 1869; Samuel T., born in Santa Barbara county, January 8, 1871; 
Bertha, born in Butte county, February 11, 1873; and Clara M., born in Ukiah, 
Mendocino county, December 27, 1879.
