MAPPA, 32 Franklin street, is a native of New York, and was born May 16, 1823. He received his education in his native State, and entered the engineering corps of the New York and Erie Railroad and afterward went to Buffalo, New York. In 1851 he came as far west as Wisconsin, and was employed as clerk in the United States Land Office at Stevens' Point. In 1856 he located in Eau Claire, remaining there about eight years. In 1864 he came from Eau Claire direct to Los Angeles City. For a short time he engaged in farming and then accepted a position in the public offices. In 1867 was nominated for county judge of Los Angeles County. In 1872 he was appointed Deputy Collector of Internal Revenue and held that office two years. In 1880 he went to San Diego as book-keeper for a firm of contractors on the California Southern Railroad, remaining there about nine months. With the exception of this short time he has lived here continuously for a quarter of a century, and during the most of this time has been connected in different capacities with the public offices of the city and county. He has had a large experience in public affairs, and there are few men in the county who have such an intimate knowledge of the affairs of the public. In October, 1859, Mr. Mappa was united in marriage to Miss Margaret Swift, a native of the city of Albany, New York. They have three children: Elizabeth, wife of Frank R. Day, of this city, and two sons, John and William, both residing here. P. � A native of New York; arrived in California in 1852; was a member of the Fourth Regiment of U. S. Infantry. Came to Bucksport in February, 1853, and helped to build the fort at that place. Present residence, Cape Mendocino; lighthouse-keeper.
