Santa Cruz County Biographies WILLIAM McELROY Submitted by Kathy Sedler This file is part of the California Genealogy & History Archives http://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~cagha/index.htm This gentleman, who is a member of the Santa Cruz County Pioneer Association was born in Erie County, Pennsylvania, January 3, 1816. He was reared on a farm, and on May 26, 1849, started for California, overland, arriving first in Los Angeles, and in San Francisco December 6 of the same year. His trip across the plains was an eventful one, as he was sick with mountain fever at Salt Lake, and was attacked by Indians a number of times, but finally arrived in this State without losing his scalp. He mined near Marysville, and a year later engaged in farming and stock raising. In 1885 he left Sonoma County for Santa Cruz, and has since resided in this county.
