ORTEGA, son of Stevan and Dogracia (Ruiz) Ortega, was born in Santa Barbara, March 19, 1850. At the age of fifteen years he left home and came to San Luis Obispo to attend school and prepare himself for a business life. In 1870 he took charge of the express business of Wells, Fargo & Co., and also the Pacific Coast Stage Company's business, remaining in that capacity until 1876. Mr. Ortega then engaged in the stationery business on his own account, continuing until 1885. Since that date he has been in the insurance and real-estate business. He was City Treasurer from 1870 to 1880, the only public office he has ever held, although requested at various times to accept nominations. Mr. Ortega was married May 8, 1888, to Miss Mary Murphy, of San Francisco. They have one child. History of Santa Barbara, San Luis Obispo and Ventura Counties, California - by C.M.
