Surnames: Pott, Lux This gentleman, widely known as the manager of the great Fredericksburg Brewery, is the son of the late F. Schunemann-Pott, who was the leader of the German Free-thinkers in the United States. Mr. Pott Sr. was a political exile from the Fatherland, and for many years presided over the congregation of Free-thinkers at Philadelphia, coming to San Francisco over twenty years ago, and assuming a similar office at that place. He was the German Bob Ingersoll, and the most noted orator of his race in this country. His death, widely regretted, occurred July 31, 1891. F. S. Pott, Jr., the subject of this brief sketch, was born in Philadelphia, June 1, 1856, coming to California with his parents in 1871. He had graduated from the High School at Philadelphia at the age of 15, and on his arrival at San Francisco engaged in the wholesale liquor business. In 1881 Mr. Pott removed to Walla Walla, Wash., where he conducted a general merchandising business, coming to San Jose in 1886 as the secretary and virtually manager of the Fredericksburg Brewing Company. When the brewery went into the syndicate in 1890, Mr. Pott became the manager in fact, since retaining that responsible position. On September 9, 1891, Mr. Pott was married to Miss Lizzie Lux, eldest daughter of Henry Lux of this city. During the term of Mr. Pott's management many additions have been made to the brewery, notably the immense malt house, the largest in the State. His popularity with all classes, united with splendid business ability, has added greatly to the local business of the Fredericksburg. From the Commerative Edition January 1, 1892, San Jose Daily Mercury contributed by jchavnar MEN WE ALL KNOW Biographical Sketches of Well-Known San Joseans THE STORY OF THEIR SUCCESS.
