Page 285. was born in Weathersfield, Connecticut, and educated at the Public High School in Newark, New Jersey. He was a clerk in his father's store at Newark when but a lad of twelve years. When sixteen he became a member of the firm, and subsequently served in the great house of A. T. Stewart & Co., New York. In 1862, under the advice of, and in company with his uncle, C. P. Huntington, he came to California, and found his first employment in the dry goods house of Hardy & Hall, J street. He was soon after given the position of bookkeeper with Huntington & Hopkins, and served in that capacity until admitted to the firm, January 1, 1868.
