	lives twenty-four miles from Sacramento and three miles from 
Courtland; he owns fifty-six acres of land; was born in Germany, in 1831; he 
emigrated to the United States in 1853; came to this county in 1854. In 1859 he 
returned East, to Illinois, and was married New Year's Eve, 1860, to Margaret 
Hale, also a native of Germany; he then came back to California, to Grand 
Island; they have four children three sons and a daughter. His land and 
improvements are worth about $5,600. Post Office, Courtland. A view of his place
