JUDGE HENRY M. SMITH, brother of the preceding (Colonel George H Smith), was 
born near Arlington, Fairfax County, Virginia, in 1844; was in the Confederate 
service; three years, being Captain of a company for a time; was in Mexico 
1866-�67; January 2, 1868, reached San Francisco, and taught school in Oakland 
Academy until May, 1869, since which time he has been a resident of Los Angeles, 
practicing law; was Superior Judge from March, 1883, to the following January, 
filling Sepulveda�s unexpired term.
