He was born in Salem, Massachusetts, in 1799. He came to Los Angeles nearly sixty years ago. He became the owner of land in the southern part of Los Angeles County, equal in extent to a European Duchy; and his cattle roamed and roared �on a thousand hills� like the �bulls of Bashan.� It used to be reported that he branded as many as 800 calves annually. His home was for many years on the site of the present �Baker Block.� He died in 1871. His widow, a daughter of Don Juan Bandini, after his death married Colonel R. S. Baker.
