Sacramento County Biographies JOHN WALDIE Transcribed by: Nancy Pratt Melton This file is part of the California Genealogy & History Archives http://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~cagha/index.htm FRANKLIN TOWNSHIP PAGE 262. was born at Kelso, Scotland in 1822. Here he resided until 1850, when he came to New York and remained five years, engaged in blacksmithing a trade learned in Scotland. Late in the year 1855 he started for California, and, in December, found himself in Placerville. Christmas day Mr. Waldie began the erection of the first foundry in Placerville. From 1856 to 1865 he conducted one of the largest blacksmith shops in Sacramento. It was destroyed by fire in 1865. Hill's Ferry, on the San Joaquin River, was next made his home, where, for five years, blacksmithing was continued, when failing health induced Mr. Waldie to remove to his present home, eight miles South of Sacramento. His farm embraces two hundred and twelve acres, well improved. A view may be seen on another page. Was married in 1869 to Miss Margaret Lenox. They have no children.
