Was born in Cornish, York County, Maine, November 28, 1827, and resided there and in Massachusetts until 1852, when he came to California. On arrival he immediately proceeded to the mines for two years. Subsequently, coming to Alameda County, he worked at the Mission San Jose for Mr. Beard; and finally, in 1862, purchased the forty-six acre farm now occupied by his widow. Mr. Wales died December 17, 1880. He married, October 11, 1852, Miss May Kelly, a native of Ireland, and left a family of nine children, viz.: Olive, born December 6, 1859; William, born December 16, 1861; George, born September 10, 1865; Abbie, born June 10, 1867; Maggie, born June 4, 1869; Jura, born June 1, 1871; May, born May 2, 1873; Anna, born October 23, 1876; Harry, born August 5, 1878.
