J. D. WESTERVELT 
 
is a native of Michigan City, Indiana, and was born August 21, 1844. His father, 
James Westervelt, then a prosperous dry-goods merchant, was a native of New 
York, and one of the pioneers of Indiana. He died in 1847 at Niles, Michigan. J. 
D. Westervelt is the youngest of his family of six children, and prior to the 
time of coming to Los Angeles had lived at Niles, Elkhart and Muskegon. 
Thirty-two years he has assiduously devoted to the art of photography, in which 
he excels. He married Miss Emma C. Conklin at Niles, Michigan, on December 6, 
1865.
