Page 276. lives eighteen miles from Sacramento and three and a half miles from Elk Grove, his Post Office. Was born in the State of New York, 1822, and lived there until 1849, engaged in farming. He went to Wisconsin in that year and remained until 1850, when he came to California across the plains, and followed mining in Calaveras County until 1853; he then returned East. In 1854 he drove a large herd of cattle across the plains, and on his arrival in this State he settled in this county on present location, and has been engaged in farming and stock-raising ever since. He was married in January, 1856, to Miss Elizabeth Sampson, a native of England. They have one son and two daughters. Mr. Woodward has held the office of School Trustee.
