Was born in Caswell county, North Carolina, October 1, 1843. When an infant he was taken to Missouri, in which State he resided until 1861, in which year he crossed the plains to California and settled in Placer county. Here he followed mining until 1863, when he transferred his location to Nevada county, still being engaged in the mines, and finally, in 1865, came to Sonoma county and settled in Mendocino township. In this locality he was engaged in the manufacture of chairs until 1870, when he removed his affairs to Forrestville, and there resided until 1877, the period of his establishing himself in his present place of business.
