GEORGE HOOVER.  This old pioneer of '49 is the son of Jacob and Rosanna Orviller Hoover, born in 
Richland County, Ohio, in May, 1826. He moved with his parents, when eight years old, and settled in 
Quincy, Illinois, where he attended school and helped his father on the farm, and remained in that 
place until March, 1849. He then started for California, coming the old emigrant route, and first located 
in the Golden State at Hangtown (Placerville), where he followed mining for two years. He then made 
a visit to his home in Quincy, where he sojourned until September 1st, when he proceeded to New 
Orleans, and sailed from that port for San Francisco September 10, 1852, coming via Panama, and 
arriving in San Francisco October 20th of the above year. He then proceeded to Salem, Oregon, where 
he engaged in farming, and followed this for three years. In the fall of 1856 we find this old pioneer 
anchored in Napa Valley, on the place where he now resides, consisting of one hundred and twenty 
acres, two miles west of Calistoga, surrounded by his family and respected by the community in which 
he lives. He was married in Calistoga to Miss Elizabeth Bartlett, a native of Canada. Their children are 
Charles, Mary, Bell, and Ada.
