Born in Bavaria, Germany, November 22, 1838. In 1861 he came to America, first settling in Jefferson county, New York. He remained here, with the exception of a few months spent in New York city, until 1863, when he came, via Panama, to California and located in Marin county, and engaged in the dairying business until 1870. After spending one year in San Francisco, he came to this county and settled on his present farm, comprising one thousand acres. This was on November 1, 1871. In September, 1876, he visited the Centennial Exposition, and from there went to Europe and all parts of the globe. June, 1878, found him again on his farm in this county, where he is at present actively engaged in dairying, manufacturing about thirty thousand pounds of cheese per annum, and thirteen thousand and two hundred pounds of butter.
