Was born in Jefferson county, Iowa, December 16, 1840. When about twelve years of age, his parents emigrated to California, crossing the plains with ox-teams, arriving in this county about the 20th of September, 1852. After a residence of one year in Green valley township, they purchased a farm of two hundred acres about five miles west of Petaluma. After residing in the county about ten years, the subject of this sketch took up his abode in eastern Oregon, and followed mining about three years, when he returned to this county and rented the place where he now lives, but remained only one year, when he went to Fort Ross and engaged in the wood business for one year, and then returned and bought the farm he rented the year previous. Dairying is his principal business. Married Mrs. Jane Shield, widow of Robert Shield, in the year 1871. She has by her first husband three children: Frank, Agnes and Edwin.
