Introduction to the Seventh Regiment of Infantry This regiment of infantry was organized in San Francisco , January 24, 1865 , under Colonel Charles W. Lewis , who was mustered as Colonel January 11, 1865 . He was made Brevet Brigadier-General of Volunteers March 13, 1865 , for faithful and meritorious service; was mustered out May 22, 1866 . He died February 3, 1871 . The headquarters of the regiment was at Presidio, San Francisco , until March, 1865; then at Tubac, A.T. , until June, 1865; then at Fort Mason , A.T. , until its return to San Francisco to be mustered out, which took place May 22, 1866 . There are no remarks on the muster rolls or monthly returns of headquarters or the companies of this regiment, showing the service they performed. COMPANY A Was organized in Sacramento by Capt. James P. Olmstead during the month of October, 1864, and was mustered in at that place October 28, 1864 . The company was first stationed at Camp Union; during the month of November it moved to the Presidio, San Francisco, where it remained until March, 1865, when it went to Fort Yuma, Cal., where it was stationed until September; then at Fort McDowell, A.T., until March, 1866, when it was ordered to the Presidio, San Francisco, for muster out, which event took place April 13, 1866. COMPANY B Was organized at Marysville , Cal. , by Captain Alexander Gibson , and was mustered into the United States service Nov. 1, 1864 . (The date given in the table on page 10 is wrong.) After its organization it was sent to the Presidio, San Francisco , where it remained until May, 1865; it then went to Tucson , A.T. , where it remained until ordered to the Presidio, San Francisco , for final muster out on April 26, 1866 . COMPANY C Was organized at Jackson , Amador County , Cal. , by Captain Walter S. Cooledge , and was mustered into the United States service at that place by Captain Fleming , U.S.A. , October 27, 1864 (the date of muster in on page 10 being wrong). The company was stationed at the Presidio, San Francisco , from November, 1864, to March, 1865; then at Fort Mojave , A.T. , during the balance of its term of service, until it was ordered to the Presidio for final muster out, which took place April 26, 1866 . COMPANY D This company was raised by Captain Calderwood at Dutch Flat, and was mustered into the United States service at the Presidio, San Francisco, January 28, 1865; it remained at the Presidio until April, 1865, when it marched to Tubac, A.T., where it remained until September, 1865; then at Fort Mason, A.T., until March, 1866, when it was ordered to the Presidio for muster out, which took place May 22, 1866. The following remarks are found on a muster and description roll: �Company D, Seventh Infantry, California Volunteers, left Drum Barracks, Cal. , on the fourth day of April, 1865, en route for Fort Yuma , and thence to Tubac, A.T. First day�s march, to Domingo�s Ranch, eight miles; second day, El Monte, seventeen miles; third day, Chino Ranch, twenty-five miles; fourth day, Temescal, sixteen miles; fifth day, La Laguna, eighteen miles; sixth day, Tomales, twenty miles; seventh day, Dutchman�s Ranch, sixteen miles; eighth day, La Cruz, fifteen miles; ninth day, San Felipe, twenty-three miles; tenth day, Vallecita, eighteen miles; eleventh day, Carissa Creek, eighteen miles; twelfth day, Indian Wells, thirty-six miles; thirteenth day, Alamo, thirty miles; fourteenth day, Cook�s Wells, twenty-three miles; fifteenth day, Pilot Knob, fifteen miles; sixteenth day, Fort Yuma, ten miles; arriving on the nineteenth day of April, 1865. Marched from Fort Yuma towards Tubac, A.T. , April twenty-first. First day, crossed the Colorado, and marched five miles, to Gila River; second day, Gila River, fifteen miles; fourth day, Filibuster Camp, eighteen miles; fifth day, Mohawk Camp, eighteen miles; sixth day, Teamster�s Camp, thirteen miles; seventh day, Burk�s Station, twenty-seven miles; eighth day, Oatman Flat, twelve miles; ninth day, Kinyon�s Station, fourteen miles; tenth day, Gila Bend, eighteen miles; arriving there on the thirtieth day of April, 1865. Total distance marched to date, four hundred and fifty miles.� COMPANY E This company was raised by Captain Hiram A. Messenger, and was mustered into the service of the United States November 29, 1864 , at San Francisco (the date given on page 10 being wrong). The company was stationed at the Presidio, San Francisco , from the date of organization to the last of March, 1865. It then went to Tubac, A.T. , where it remained until September, 1865; then at Fort Mason , A.T. , until May, 1866, when it was ordered back to the Presidio, San Francisco , for final muster out, which occurred June 28, 1866 . The following remarks are found on the muster roll of July and August, 1865: �Captain Messenger and thirty enlisted men left Tubac, A.T. , on the thirteenth day of July, for a scout in the Guachuca Mountains . On the twenty-second day of July, Captain Messenger and fifteen men were surrounded and attacked by between one and two hundred Indians. An action of about one hour ensued, when the Indians were driven off with considerable loss. Night coming on, and there being a heavy rain, it was found impossible to pursue the Indians. Sergeant William D. Kelly and private John Henry were killed, and private Abel Roe wounded in the knee. Returned to Tubac, August 4, 1865 .� COMPANY F This company was raised in San Francisco by Captain J.W. Owen , and was mustered into the United States service at the Presidio, December 25, 1864 . (The date of muster as given on page 10 is wrong.) The company remained at the Presidio until June, 1865; it then went to Fort Yuma , Cal. , where it remained until September, 1865. It was at Maricopa Wells, A.T. , September 30, 1865 ; and at Camp McDowell , A.T. , until ordered back for final muster out, which took place at the Presidio, San Francisco , April 15, 1866 . There are no further records of the service performed by this company. COMPANY G This company was raised in Placerville , California , by Captain Thomas J. Heninger , and was mustered into the United States service October 30, 1864 . (The date given on page 10 is wrong.) It was immediately sent to the Presidio, San Francisco , where it remained until May, 1865; it was then stationed at Tubac, A.T. , until September, 1865; then at Fort Mason , A.T. , during the balance of its term of service. It was mustered out at the Presidio, San Francisco , June 28, 1865 . There are no records showing the active service performed by this company. COMPANY H This company was raised by Captain James W. Smith at Bear Valley , and was mustered into the United States service in San Francisco , January 10, 1865 , where it remained until May, 1865. It was then stationed at Fort Yuma , Cal. , during the balance of its term of service, and was mustered out at Drum Barracks, Cal. , March 1, 1866 . There are no records showing the active duty of this company. COMPANY I This company was raised by Captain George D. Kendall , and was mustered into the United States service at the Presidio, November 25, 1864 , and was stationed at that post until May, 1865; then at Fort Whipple , A.T. , until February, 1866, when it was ordered to the Presidio, and mustered out March 31, 1866 . There is no record of the active duty performed by this company. COMPANY K This company was organized in San Francisco by Captain James H. Shepard , and was mustered into the service at the Presidio, November 25, 1864 . It remained at that post until March, 1865; then at Fort Yuma until August, 1865; then at Fort McDowell , A.T. , until March, 1866, when it was ordered to the Presidio, ad mustered out April 26, 1866 . There are no records showing the active service performed by this company.
