Youngs, Benjamin Franklin

Date of Death: 01/14/1927
Sgt. Us Army
Civil War Congressional Medal of Honor Recipient. Served in the Civil War as a Corporal in Company I, 1st Michigan Volunteer Sharpshooters. He was awarded the CMOH for his bravery at Petersburg, Virginia on June 17, 1864. His citation reads “Capture of flag of 35th North Carolina Infantry (C.S.A.)”. His Medal was awarded to him in December 1864.

Benjamin Youngs never had the recognition he deserved. He got his medal at nineteen by capturing the colors of the 35th North Carolina
Infantry at Petersburg VA during the battle of the Crater. He was a
native of Ontario, Canada who along with 50,000 other Canadians were in the US Civil War.
We had relatives, reps from the Canadian Military, the Canadian council and a direct descendent, Steven Youngs (last photo) who now lives near
Palm Springs. They only discoverd the original MOH amongst his mother's stuff less than 18 months ago. His bio is very interesting too. We even
had the mayor of his town in Canada present. This is the reason for the Canadian Flag.
